Cushing's syndrome is a familiar disease that affects older horses. Veterinarians focus on treating its symptoms, since the cure for Cushing's disease is still elusive. The best approach is to make the horse affected by the disease as comfortable as possible. Herbal treatments as a supplement to standard drug treatments for Cushing's disease, however, show outstanding results.
Recognizing the symptoms of Cushing's syndrome
Hormonal instabilities, as the result of either over-activity of the pituitary gland or a tumor in the gland itself, give rise to Cushing's syndrome. As a group of clinical signs and symptoms, the distinctive characteristic of Cushing's is an unusually long, dense, kinky or rough-cut hair surface that does not shake off in the spring, as it ordinarily should.
