If you are like me, suffering from seasonal allergies to pretty much everything that blooms this time of year, you've probably tried several brands and types of allergy medication on the market. The problem with most medication out there is they cause dizziness, drowsiness, and that "disconnected" feeling. Not only is it irritating to walk around tired all day from the medication, it is harmful to your system. It's not normal to feel that way all day long.
So that is why I turned to some herbal remedies to help ease allergy attacks. They work just as well, and they don't make you drowsy. In some instances, you can even feel more energetic because you don't have drugs flowing through your body, and they are natural.
An allergy is the result of your immune system's over-reaction to pollens, grass, dust, or anything else airborne. Even certain foods, cosmetics, and animals can set off an allergic reaction. When there is an over abundance of allergens present, your body fights back by producing excess inflammatory chemicals, such as histamine. This is what brings on the sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, etc. The anti-histamines do a great job of blocking the action of the histamine, but do nothing to actually help the underlying problem.
Here are some herbal remedies and tips that you may find that will work to help ease your seasonal allergies. They can be taken in pill form, or they can be made into a tea, although you may want to mix in another flavor, such as peppermint leaves, as some of these don't taste the greatest by themselves! Of course, before trying any of these out, you should first consult your physician.
Echinacea: Ah, here is the most well known herb to boost your immune system all around. It has been tried, tested and proven for over 50 years to keep you healthy. It is a wonderful supplement to add to your diet. 300mg. twice a day is the recommended dosage.
Nettle: Nettle has been long used to treat seasonal allergies. It contains quercetin, which has been proven to inhibit the release of histamine, without making you drowsy at all. 400 mg. is the recommended dosage, twice a day.
Elderflower: Great for nasal congestion and throat inflammation. It is mainly prepared as a tea to drink, or it can be gargled to ease sore throat symptoms.
Goldenrod: The leaves and flowers of this natural herb contain antiseptic properties, targeted at the upper respiratory tract. For allergy relief, consume 3-4 cups of this tea daily.
Vitamin C: Naturally found in most fruits and some vegetables, this is also one of the best immune system boosters. A little known fact about vitamin C is that it naturally lowers histamine levels in the body, again without causing drowsiness. There are supplements on the market to help maintain a healthy level of vitamin C in you diet.
Olive Leaf: This is a natural anti-microbial, and can be taken in capsule form, or in natural nasal sprays, such as Seagate's Olive Leaf Nasal Spray.
You can also try steaming with essential oils to relieve allergy symptoms. Eucalyptus, Pine, Lavender, and Niaouli contain anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. They contain volatile oils that are antiseptic to the nasal and sinus passages. Place a few drops of whichever oil you wish to use in a pot of water on the stove and heat until it starts to steam. For best results, inhale the vapors directly. You can place a few drops into your home humidifier as well. Never take essential oils internally.
If you don't want to make up your own remedies you can visit your local health food or organic food store. There you will find most of these remedies already made up and available for you, as well as staff on hand to answer any questions about any of these seasonal allergy relievers. Again, it would be a good idea to consult your doctor, especially if you are taking any prescription medications. There may be harmful interactions with other drugs.
So, the next time you find yourself walking around like a zombie from the over the counter medications, you may want to take an extra trip to the health food store and look into other ways to ease your seasonal allergies. Your body will thank you!
